Merrily We Roll Along
|
||||
| The genius of Stephen Sondheim was sorely
missed in this play that moves in reverse chronological order (1980-1957).
This musical is about Franklin Shepard and the tracings of his rise to
fame and subsequent lessons learned. As the play begins and the
curtain rises, we see the graduation of the Lake Forest Academy class of
1980. Franklin Shepard is introduced and advises the students to be
realistic. After listening to his speech, the students challenge his
advice, remove their robes, and become characters in the story of how
Shepard got from where he was to where he is standing now.
What
follows can be seen either as taking place in the older Frank's mind,
against the backdrop of the kids, the bleachers and the lockers, or as the
cautionary tale of his life acted out by the students. Merrily We Roll Along opened November 16, 1981 at the Alvin Theatre. It closed November 28, 1981. The show ran for only 16 performances. The show won a Drama Desk award for outstanding lyrics. |
