Basile Westfield Playhouse Presents Almost, Maine

A Whimsical and Heartfelt Collection of Stories Illuminated by the Northern Lights

Main Street Productions brings John Cariani’s beloved romantic comedy Almost, Maine to the stage at Basile Westfield Playhouse, located at 220 N. Union Street, running February 5–15. This charming and unconventional production explores love in all its forms through nine interconnected vignettes, each unfolding beneath the mystical glow of the Northern Lights on a cold January night in the fictional town of Almost.

Though Almost doesn’t technically exist—it is “almost” a town—the stories that take place there feel deeply familiar. Each vignette centers on a moment of emotional turning point: new beginnings, quiet endings, misunderstandings, reconciliations, and the fragile hope that accompanies human connection. Together, these moments create a tapestry that is humorous, poignant, awkward, and deeply moving.

Directed by Kathy Watson, this production embraces the vignette structure that makes Almost, Maine unique. Rather than telling one continuous story, the play presents nine short scenes—each lasting 10 to 15 minutes—that occur simultaneously across the town at approximately 9:00 p.m. on a Friday night. While each story stands alone, all are linked by theme, setting, and the subtle magic of the Northern Lights.

“It’s very different,” Watson explained in a recent interview. “It is nine vignettes instead of one whole play. All of the stories relate to love—some good, some bad. There are new beginnings and maybe some endings, but in each story there’s a special moment when the Northern Lights put their magic into the mix.”

This production features a large ensemble cast of 17 actors performing 19 roles, allowing both experienced performers and newer actors the opportunity to take center stage. Watson intentionally leaned into this structure to create meaningful opportunities for performers who might otherwise appear briefly in larger productions. “Each vignette only has two people, so they’re actually the leads in their story,” Watson said. “That takes some pressure off for newer actors, while still giving them a really important moment on stage.”

The cast reflects the spirit of regional community theatre, with performers coming from Westfield, Noblesville, Carmel, Indianapolis, and as far as Greenfield. The result is a production that blends fresh energy with seasoned talent, united by Cariani’s sharp, lyrical dialogue.

In addition to its artistic goals, Main Street Productions remains committed to accessibility and inclusion. An ASL-interpreted performance will be offered on Sunday, February 8. A designated seating area will be reserved for patrons who wish to sit near the interpreter for optimal viewing. Audience members are encouraged to note their interest in ASL seating when purchasing tickets online so ushers can accommodate them appropriately.
